Ecological insights from 65 years of study on lakes in the Windermere catchment

The lakes in the Windermere catchment are among the most intensively studied of any in the world. This research was started by the Freshwater Biological Association and in particular by JWG Lund who, in 1945, initiated a project on phytoplankton dynamics in the two basins of Windermere, and also in Esthwaite Water and Blelham Tarn. This was continued and later expanded, becoming, almost by accident, a long-term monitoring programme. In 1989, the responsibility for maintaining the monitoring was transferred to the Institute of Freshwater Ecology; a predecessor of the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology which maintains this work today.

This meeting is a celebration of 65-years of research within the Windermere catchment and the numerous ecological insights that have arisen from this work over many years.
